The Ark Of Noah

“So God said to Noah: “I will put an end to all people, because the earth is full of violence because of them. I will surely destroy both them and the earth. So make an ark of cypress wood. Make rooms in it and cover it with pitch inside and out. This is how you should build it: The ark should be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.ÿ Make a roof for it and finish the ark 18 inches from the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.”

Genesis 6:13-16

In Genesis chapters 6-9 we read about the global flood and the ark that Noah is commanded by God to build to save his family (him, his wife, his three sons and their wives) and couples any kind of animal.

Many Christians have been scorned because they believe the ark narrative. How gullible does one have to be to believe that pairs of animals just “appeared” to walk on the ark? Can you really believe that a pair of polar bears walked from the North Pole to somewhere in the Middle East to board an ark? How about penguins? Or a kangaroo?

The Bible does not tell us how this was accomplished, but if we believe in a God who created our world, it is not too much of a stretch to believe that this same God could also do the ark boarding.

The surprising evidence from Noah’s account, however, is the ark itself. What did it look like; Genesis records specific dimensions as well as detailed instructions on how the ark should be constructed. This is not just a small rowing boat. Nor did it look like ships of those days. You don’t need to be an expert in “Bronze Age boat building” to realize that seagoing boats at the time were probably very small, unable to carry large loads or many passengers. They were probably not seaworthy enough to cross large bodies of water. In the New Testament the people must have faced the same nautical problems that faced those in Noah’s day. We read of the challenges they encountered daily while fishing on the Sea of Galilee and how Paul was shipwrecked in a great storm.

In 1992, archaeologists in Dover, England, discovered the remains of a large wooden boat believed to be 3,550 years old (which would date it close to the time of Moses). This vessel is called the boat Dover. Its size is estimated at 15–18 meters (50–60 ft) long (only about half to two-thirds of the vessel has been recovered) and 2.4 meters (8 ft) wide. It could have crossed the canal, carrying supplies, livestock and passengers, probably propelled by at least 18 oarsmen.

This would be a fairly large vessel for the Bronze Age. Compare this with the ark. The ark was 450 feet long (nine times the length of the Dover vessel) and 75 feet wide (again, more than nine times as wide). This makes the square footage of the ark about 85 times larger! Furthermore, the Dover boat is simply an open row boat. Instead, the ark is 45 feet tall (3 decks) – a real monster compared to the Dover boat!

The dimensions of the ark make it really look like a modern container ship.

Shaped like a rectangular box with an aspect ratio of 6 to 1 (450 feet by 75 feet), the ark would have excellent stability. The normal length-to-width ratio of ancient ships was 10 to 1. However, Noah used the same ratios we now use in modern shipbuilding. An interesting parallel with the size of the Ark is seen in the known Titanic. The Titanic it was 823 feet long and 98 feet wide (a ratio of 9 to 1) with a cargo capacity of 45,000 tons. However, its total capacity was similar to Noah’s Ark Titanic it was somewhat longer and wider.

Taking the dimensions of the ark and using “a sheep” as the average animal, Dr. John Whitcomb and Dr. Henry Morris estimated that the ark could contain up to 130,500 animals. They estimate the total number at about 17,600 (3,500 mammals, 8,600 birds, 5,500 reptiles & amphibians). They conclude that the ark will only fill 27% of its available space.

Obviously many disagree with their calculations, but there is no doubt that the ark was large, especially for its time, and its dimensions and proportion are remarkably consistent with modern shipbuilding. He certainly displayed a technical expertise that was unknown in the days of either Noah or Moses.

Moses lived most of his life in the desert. Probably the only ships he had seen were the small boats that traveled the Nile. How did he know these dimensions? How could a sandman capture a container ship? And how could he know the preferred ratio of length, width and height of such a vessel?
