Jana, Goddess of Doorways and Seeing

Jana is not a known Goddess. We know better her husband and her brother Janus, who gave his name to the first month of the year. An interesting tidbit here is that Jana gave the name to June through her reincarnation as the Roman Juno. I think of the Jewish tradition that the year consists of two half years, one beginning on Rosh Hashanah, the Fall, and the other on Pesach, the Spring. Perhaps the Romans had a similar tradition, one year from Midwinter to Midsummer, the year of Janus, and another from Midsummer to Midwinter, the year of Jana.

Jana is the goddess of doors. One could say that the saying “when God closes a door, opens a window” fits Jana perfectly. There are many kinds of doors in life. Some take us into a whole new life, and these should be celebrated, as we celebrate graduation. Jana is also the Goddess of initiations. Some doors have no doors, and walking through them just expands life. These doors can be used in both directions. An example of this is the journey from one role we have in life to another role. Traveling is another one of Jana’s strengths.

She is the goddess of beginnings, including the New Year. It is two-faced, simultaneously facing the new and the old year, the future and the past. Jana’s role as gatekeeper reminds me of the High Priestess of the Tarot, who sits with Her moon in front of the door and like a sphinx, waits for you to answer the question correctly before letting you into the Empress’s paradise.

According to Italian tradition, the new year begins in midwinter. In Finland Midwinter is a season for divination. There are especially two kinds of divination practiced. mirror divination and divination with molten tin (Molybdomancy). Both are sacred to Jana, for she, the all-seeing goddess, uses every reflective surface as Her window. She is the Moon Goddess, and what else is the Moon but a huge mirror that reflects the Sun’s light back to Earth?

Jana is also the goddess of divination, and if she likes you, she will allow you to see things through Her eyes. Hers is every kind of mirror of divination and scrying.

Her animal is the peacock and Jana’s eyes are on the peacock’s beautiful tail. This is why peacock feathers bring luck. Jana can see your house through the eyes. In some countries the peacock feather brings bad luck – people do not want a pagan goddess to see in their homes.

Jana evolved into Diana and Juno, both of these Goddesses still have her qualities. Diana held the moon and the peacocks Juno. The Holy Spirit of Christianity is also transformed into Jana.

When the Greek Gods took over the Roman Pantheon, Jana lived as Juno Lucina, which is Juno’s name as goddess of childbirth. Childbirth is just another beginning, entering through a door, and Lucina means “The Light One.” Juno Lucina became Saint Lucy, who is celebrated on December 13. This was the day of the winter solstice according to the old reckoning (the Julian calendar), and Saint Lucy is the patron Saint of the blind.
