East Central Idaho and Beyond
Fall is near east central Idaho. The leaves are changing colors giving the forest a more vibrant look, the golden fields of wheat and hay are being harvested and the digging of Idaho’s famous potatoes has begun. Driving the Teton Scenic Road and Mesa Falls Scenic Drive takes you right through the heart of some of this spectacular scenery.
The 69-mile Teton Scenic Byway begins in Swan Valley on the Snake River and traverses the Targhee National Forest, where wildlife can be spotted around every corner and the forest shows the beauty of the approaching fall season. As the highway drops out of the National Forest, it passes through the historic towns of Victor and Driggs, where mountain men and fur trappers held their annual meeting. As the highway cuts through the rolling hills of the range, the towering 13,000-foot peaks of the Teton Mountains can be seen to the east.
Connecting to the north end of the Teton Scenic Byway in Ashton is the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway. For 28 miles the highway runs northeast through the vivid colors of the Targhee National Forest before ending just south of Island Park. Along the trail are Lower and Upper Mesa Falls, two of the most impressive waterfalls in the West. These two falls are the only falls in Idaho that have not been disturbed for irrigation or hydroelectric projects. The lower falls are best viewed from the overlook at Grand View Campground, where the Snake River squeezes into a narrow canyon that drops 65 feet. A few miles up the highway is the upper falls, with a visitor center that has information on the history of the surrounding area. A developed boardwalk path leads to the falls where views show the Snake River before the 114-foot plunge, within a few feet of the falls themselves which run about 200 feet across. As the walkway climbs the cliff, the view of the entire waterfall is beyond impressive.
There are times when driving to your intended destination can be just as rewarding as the destination itself. Driving US 26 around the southern end of the Snake River Range offers some awe-inspiring beauty, where the highway winds around the rock walls that run parallel to the Palisades Reservoir with the towering peaks of the Caribou Range as a backdrop. As the highway crosses into Wyoming, it takes a more northerly route along the eastern cliffs of the mountains that run parallel to the Snake River creating a beautiful environment where wildlife thrives in abundance before reaching the valley just east of the Teton Range. Returning to Idaho from the Tetons is Teton Pass located at the southern end of the Teton Range. The highway reaches an elevation of 8,431 feet where one will have excellent views of Jackson Hole and the surrounding valley.
A park of over 300,000 acres in a large valley of meadows and virgin forests, where there are no foothills to block the view of the mountains. A mountain range that rises above pristine lakes, alpine terrain, the Snake River and home to amazing wildlife. A park where the John D Rockefeller Parkway crosses the eastern side of the park and ends in the southern part of Yellowstone National Park, making both parks easily accessible. This is Teton National Park, a wonder in itself.
Getting around the Teton National Parks is fairly straightforward, with the Grand Loop Road being part of the Rockefeller Parkway that passes through a large section of Lake Jackson and the Teton Road, which crosses the Lake Jackson Dam and approaches the Teton Range. with two other scenic roads branching off. Signal Mountain Road is a narrow two-lane road that climbs the mountain to an elevation of 7,727 feet, where views of Jackson Lake with the Teton Mountains as a backdrop provide a view that will last a lifetime. Last but not least, is the Jenny Lake Loop, this one-way traffic highway passes through a dense green forest that passes several lakes with hiking trails before running parallel to Jenny Lake.
For the kids in all of us, the Idaho Falls Zoo is a great little side trip. The selection of zoo animals for our enjoyment is quite unique, with animals from Africa, Asia, Australia as well as North America. There is a designated area for a children’s petting zoo and next to it is a breed of penguins that have adapted to cold and hot weather. Yellowstone Bear World just south of Rexburg not only has a children’s petting area where you can bottle feed the black bear cubs, the park has a drive through where the wildlife roam freely in their natural habitat. In fact, this is the only place guaranteed to see Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Moose, Elk and Deer.
