From First World to Third World – What Happens When the Power Goes Out

It’s a fine summer night, the air is warm, the sun is setting in the west and everything looks good, dinner is grilling, the smell of spiced meat makes the mouth water with pleasant anticipation. All seems well with the world. Around 9:30 p.m. there is a sudden brightness of lights inside the house, computers and televisions shut down, street lights go out and the hum of electricity around you dies. “A summer blackout?” you think for yourself. You get out your flashlights, gather up candles, and dust off some old board games you haven’t played since you started playing video games about fifteen years earlier. “Don’t worry, he’ll be back in no time.” you think again you finish cooking and then eat after an hour of scrabble and yaji you decide to go to bed. Never mind that above you in the sky there is an aerial light show going on as ribbons of iridescent colors flutter above near the stars.

It’s the next day and the sun is up and it’s almost noon, the thermometer outside reads 92 degrees and the air conditioner hasn’t worked all day, the fridge is now starting to heat up and the meats and milk are going to spoil. You decide to get ice from the store and jump in your car to head out. You notice you’re out of gas and head to the nearest gas station. The first thing you notice are police officers directing traffic at intersections. You say out loud to yourself. Soon you reach the gas station and there p.m. corner is a handwritten sign, (ATM and credit machines don’t work, cash only!) You catch yourself realizing you only have a few dollars on you and decide you’ll get gas later when the power comes back on, after all you only need a little ice to keep food good. This is how you drive to the corner store. There as before there is a sign “No cash, no service!” reads. But you have your two dollars and the ice is only a dollar a bag. So you walk in, the freezer inside is out and the remaining ice inside is nothing but slush. You sigh as you get back to your car and head home defeated. “What a waste of food.” you think and then as you park your car you realize you didn’t hear any radio stations playing while you were driving. You think it’s kind of weird but you don’t pay attention to it at the time.

It’s been two weeks and nothing is working again, riots have started in the city and now people are running out of food, water from municipal water sources has dried up and cars are running out of gas, grocery stores have been ransacked and it’s starting to look like society is collapsing. People raid other people’s houses and things get tragic. Police declare martial law and protect government areas. The local armory, fire departments and CERT teams have set up mobile water filtration stations and set aside one gallon per person per family. You still have some canned goods in your cupboards and some things like peanut butter and pasta, but you have no food at all and you haven’t showered in over a week.

Two days later and you’re out of food, out of water, out of gas in your car… Things aren’t looking good. You hear the sound of a generator in the distance, the smell of roasting meat wafting from a yard down the street. It’s only been two days since you’ve eaten anything but you feel like you’re hungry. Your family needs to eat and you think, well, it wouldn’t hurt to ask for a little something, maybe you can bring something in exchange for a piece of meat or an ear of corn. You take off your gold wedding band, gather more things you think might be valuable, and hesitantly head down the street with your loot in hand. As you approach the house two men are sitting on the porch holding shotguns. You show them the gold and they look at each other and shake their heads, “Get out of here or else!” they shout Then he hits you with stunned disbelief, (You’re not going to make it.)

We have been conditioned by our society to live comfortably in our daily lives, always believing that if anything happens, help will be on the way, it’s always a matter of when (THEY) will be here to help, “Don’t worry because they will be here soon and then everything will be fine”. I have to ask who (they) are? FEMA, the military, the government? The truth is (THEY) are us! We are the ones who have to protect ourselves and when survival ours is at its limit, human nature can change dramatically, we can go from civilized to savage overnight and the world we live in can be gone in a matter of days. So the question is what would happen if all the technology and was our civilized society turned upside down?

The truth of the matter is that humanity is not that advanced when it comes to our common man and the common good. I know we’d all like to believe that we’re going to come together and work alongside each other, try to bring out the best in each other and make sure everyone gets an equal opportunity, an equal share… but history teaches us that when push comes to shove, humans are as ruthless as any animal that feels its life is at stake. Those who are hungry will kill for what you have. Being prepared by stocking up on food, medicine, supplies, equipment, and even shelter will only get you so far. After a while, when the chips are down, people will be looking for what you have and no matter how prepared you think you are, with guns and ammo and how far into the wild you think you’ll be safe, it’s only a matter of time before those hungry and sick masses come to find you and take all that you have worked so hard for.

People who care about the survival of their own people should relearn what we have lost over time. We can learn so much from the pioneers, so much even from those who lived in what we now consider primitive societies, but history can confirm that for thousands of years their way of life survived much longer than our own civilization. . These old world ways have disappeared in today’s world where we have what we want when we want it. It’s very good to be prepared and have a plan, it’s better to have the knowledge to make that plan work and really be ready to start over and once you establish that lifestyle be ready to keep it that way if necessary forever. In my hubpages.com survival hub my name is cow flipper and I give out plans to help survive such a disaster a plan to help everyone who reads this make a survival plan there you can watch videos on why I think something is going to happen, and for things like residential housing and there are still lists of supplies and plans for actions that need to be done. Remember you don’t have to do it all alone, people in groups are much better than a few running for survival. The page to search will be under the End Times Survival Network if you care to check it out.

I know people will say I’m Dr. Doom, a nut on the sidelines… and the truth is, that might be true, but like most of you out there, I’m just an average guy who’s scared awake. I am a thirty three year old father of two with one on the way, a school custodian by trade and like all of us trying to scrape by paycheck to paycheck. But I know we can all feel it, the foundation of our great civilization, our great nation here in the United States is breaking, it’s getting weaker every day. The economy, the war, the environment… these are all just warnings from a much bigger threat on the horizon. We have no one to blame but ourselves and our bland way of life. Technology has made us addicted, it’s totally hypocritical for me to say that with her typing on a computer in my air conditioned apartment while I drink a Diet Pepsi, but then again I’m an average Joe. There’s no degree here on my wall, I’m not a college professor, but like most of the guys I talk to I feel the wind of change blowing and the wind looks bad. So take what I say or leave it, it’s up to you. But for those of you still reading this article, I pray and hope that we all still have our luxuries in life. I absolutely love my computer, I love my car, I love my frozen food and my fast food, I love my Old Navy pants and my Marvel T-shirts, but these are just things, it won’t matter if things go to the fan . As long as my family and I are alive and together that’s all that matters and I hope that’s what matters to you too.
