Social Life in the Shang Dynasty

The Shang rulers moved the capital to Yin (present-day Anyang, Henan Province) at the end of the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC-1046 BC), and the history and social life of the Shang Dynasty were known to the public mainly through the cultural relics discovered from the Yin Ruins, including inscriptions on oracle bones, bronze wares, pottery, bone and stoneware. What most attracted historians were the inscriptions on the oracle bones (over 100,000 pieces), which were used by ancient imperial diviners to divine the future of a person or a country.

Imperial diviners drilled a small hole in one side of a bone (not penetrating) and toasted it near a lit fire, and divined the future of a man, a country, and the universe when the other side of the bone cracked. Finally, they carved the oracle inscriptions on turtle shells or animal bones. Interestingly, the oracle inscriptions were mostly about ancestor worship rituals and the number of animals used in a sacrificial ritual in the Shang Dynasty, and some were related to atmospheric conditions (such as rain, wind and snow). with the harvest of agriculture, some were about war, and others were about people’s dreams and illnesses, from which we could learn a lot of information about the Shang dynasty.

The Shang people depended heavily on the agricultural industry and subsisted on wheat, rice, glutinous millet and soybeans, and agricultural work was mainly done by human labor, and plows were used as the main agricultural tools. Fishing and hunting were also used as a sideline by the Shang people, whose game ranged from wild boar, deer, foxes, rabbits to pheasants. In addition, the Shang people domesticated wild animals and livestock, including cows, sheep, hens, dogs, pigs, and elephants, and it was recorded that elephants were sent by the ancient Shang people to war. The Shang people were very good at making bronze items, as evidenced by the many swords, spearheads, armor, knives, arrows and axes well preserved in the Yin (Anyang) ruins, and most of the bronze items for the imperial and noble families were decorated with floral designs.

In addition to various bronze items, a number of animal designs and geometric designs were also decorated on the vessels, which were rather crude but lively. The Shang people were also experts in tooth carvings, bone carvings, jade carvings, and stone carvings, which were in the forms of human figures, tigers, rabbits, fish, birds, dragons, turtles, elephants, and palm trees.
