Western Long-Eared Bat Or Myotis Evotis

The bat which makes up about 25% of all mammals is the only true flying mammal. There are 42 species in the US. Bats are one of our most misunderstood and feared animals, but they are perhaps the most beneficial of animals to humans

The Western Long-eared bat is about 3.4 to 3.9 inches long with a body weight of 0.18 to 0.28 ounces and an average wingspan of 9.4 inches. The western Long-eared is found from Western Canada, the Western United States and parts of Baja. It lives in various areas, but mainly in forest areas, both in dry forest and in subalpine forests. It can also be found in semi-arid scrubland, sagebrush and farmland. Daytime structures include abandoned buildings, loose slabs of bark, caves, mine cliff cracks, and sinkholes. In winter, as with most bats, they tend to hibernate in caves and old mines.

The Western Long-eared is insectivorous and feeds on moths, beetles, net insects and true bugs. The flight of this bat is slow and very agile. This enables the Little Big-eared to collect insects from leaves as well as from the air. They will feed over small bodies of water, and this particular bat can turn off its sonar and “listen for insects.” It enables them to sneak up on prey and catch it before it can escape. This bat uses huge amounts of energy due to its slow flights, however this particular bat can hunt all night and eat huge amounts of insects.

This is another fairly long-lived mammal. The longest recorded is 22 years, although the average is much shorter. This bat maternity group can consist of 5-30 individuals. Potential enemies of this bat include chipmunks and bears as well as other small predators. The removal of old forest and the encroachment of caves and mines used for chicken coops also has a detrimental effect. The western Long-eared often changes rustic to limit the amount of scent that can build up. As with other bats, this species has an impact on insect control.
