Great Ways to Use Essential Oils for Your Dog

Here are some simple ways to prevent health problems in your dog. Essential oil products made by Young Living are natural ways to promote health, naturally prevent parasites and help stop tooth decay. Please note that not all essential oil brands are processed to Young Living standards and if you use other brands you may not get the benefits and may harm your pet.

I am a dog breeder and can try essential oils and then see the results. I have taken many classes, read many books, listened to countless podcasts about essential oils. I have had the pleasure of speaking with a few holistic vets who use essential oils. I tried recommended applications and found out first hand if the remedies are good solutions.

These solutions contain many benefits without expensive vet costs or the side effects of man-made products. Here are some of the Young Living products I’ve tried. The results exceeded my expectations. A big plus is that I no longer apply unnecessary poisons to my dogs or absorb the toxic substances myself.

Purification is an essential oil blend made by Young Living that is great for cleaning dog ears. Put a drop of cleanser in the palm of your hand, rub the end of a Q-tip into the drop, then clean your dog’s ear. Repeat the process with a new Q-tip for the other ear. Repeat daily until the Q-tip is free of residue. Kills ear mites instantly. Dr. Melissa Shelton, DVM has prepared tests and seen ear mites die when she applied cleaning to the microscope slide. Diffusing or spraying their bed cleaner kills pests, disinfects and keeps your home critter-free without the use of harmful chemicals.

Lavender is a natural solution for tear stains. Once a day, put a drop in the palm of your hand, then use your index finger to apply the drop by rubbing your finger across the top bridge of your dog’s nose just below his eyes. Lavender unclogs the pores of the eyes and kills the bacteria caused by the tear.

I have a few dogs with eye injuries from hunting, interacting with other pets or other issues. Dr. Melissa Shelton, DVM told me about a dog who was a last chance candidate with an eye problem. He used lavender mixed with water and had success in solving the eye problem. I mixed a solution of 8 drops of lavender in 8 ounces of steamed distilled water and a packet of usp grade sodium chloride/sodium bicarbonate. The packet is ½ teaspoon. Usp grade sodium chloride/sodium bicarbonate can be purchased at Walgreen’s or online. used for neti pot sinus rinse. It is an emulsifier and prevents the separation of the solution since oil and water do not mix. The solution should be shaken each time before use if you are not using an emulsifier. The mixture is similar to eyewash solutions used for humans. Put the mixture in a glass spray bottle. Spray the solution 2-3 times on the affected eye once a day and watch the healing begin.

Curly, our English Springer’s eye was extremely large from a hunting accident that occurred in 2006 at age 8. The eye was getting bigger and looked like it was about to burst. I was sure he would need surgery and might lose his eye. I started using the solution and his eye is back to its normal size and the cataract is getting smaller. That’s wonderful.

This solution repels parasites, relieves skin problems and makes their coat soft. It also relieves muscle pain. I mix 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of peppermint in 1 ounce of steamed distilled water. Then add one drop of Young Living Bath & Body Wash as an emulsifier to 6 ounces of water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution weekly or as needed and then massage your fingers up your dog’s spine. Your dog will love this routine.

Thieves, another blend made by Young Living is great to help prevent tooth decay. In a 4 ounce glass spray bottle, I mix 2 drops of thieves in 1 ounce of steamed distilled water. I use the solution every night to spray my dog’s upper gums and teeth. Lift the upper lip on each side of your dog’s mouth and spray the solution on the teeth. Thieves kills the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Thieves makes your dog’s immune system stronger, it is a natural antibiotic. Antibiotics made from drugs kill both bad and good bacteria. You will need to back up the good bacteria with probiotics like Life 5, yogurt, kefir, etc. if you use man-made antibiotics. Thieves Solution is a cheaper, easier, healthier method to brush their teeth daily or bring your dog to the vet for their recommended 6 month dental cleaning.

Start educating yourself by reading labels and then searching for ingredients on your computer in your browser’s search bar. I use Young Living Animal Scent shampoo to bathe my animals. It has essential oils that clean and repel parasites without the harmful side effects of other pet shampoos. It does not contain carcinogenic ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate found in most shampoos. It can be used as needed and not just once every 30 days as stated on most pet shampoos.

Another great Young Living product is Animal Scent Ointment. I use it to heal wounds. Hunting dogs get cuts when they hunt. I apply to their wounds and their wounds heal faster. It’s great to apply after removing dewclaws or attaching tails. It speeds up the healing process and prevents infections. I apply the ointment to my cuticles at night because I have to wash my hands often. the ointment heals my dry hands faster than other products i have used in the past. In addition, there are no toxics.

Another great product is Young Living Thieves Household Cleaner. I have used it to clean my kennels. Mix 30 oz. water to 1 oz. thieves household cleaner in spray bottle and kennel spray. It kills germs, bacteria and is safe for dogs even if they lick their paws. I don’t need to remove their water or food, thieves are a natural product that is safe to eat. I don’t need to rinse it or let it air dry. It doesn’t burn my lungs or irritate my skin. I remove the dog while spraying the solution. It has cinnamon and can be irritating to their eyes, while the mist settles which lasts only seconds.
