Spare the Rod-Spoil the Child – Part I
Save the Rod–Call the Child has reached new heights of sadistic and barbaric child torture. A device called “The Rod” is manufactured in Oklahoma for the sole purpose of flogging babies and children on their bare skin. The device is sold together with specific and explicit manuals such as: “To Train Up a Child” and “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” [both sold at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble] which recommend flogging infants one year or younger.
“The Rod” is being touted as the next best thing to sliced bread. It is marketed as the ideal tool for children’s education. Training children?–sounds more like someone talking about training an animal–but animal cruelty is considered a crime, so you won’t see “The Rod” advertising training your dog. If a person hits an animal with “The Rod” as intended – those who did or allowed the abuse to be administered would be arrested for cruelty.
The advertisement for “The Rod” mentions the following features and benefits:
o Flexible nylon rod — leaves just the right amount of bite without injury
o Cushioned vinyl grip (made for bike grips)–easy on parents’ hands and prevents stress on hand/arm muscles
o Balanced — ensures accuracy
o Lightweight — your hand/arm won’t get tired during use
o Safety tip — prevents nylon from developing rough edges
o Convenient — fits easily in a purse or diaper bag
o Affordable — buy one for the kitchen, bedroom, car, anywhere
o Unbreakable — will last a lifetime
o Guaranteed — satisfaction or money back
o Spoons are for cooking
o Belts are for holding up the pants
o Hands are for loving
o Rods are for instruction–Proverbs 23:13-14 AND Proverbs 22:15.
Those who believe that literacy is praised in the Bible, specifically the book of Proverbs have misinterpreted the Bible. There is a distinction between the practice in King Solomon’s time of slapping people on the back and the modern American custom of butt-slapping, punishing, spanking children. The latter is not prescribed anywhere in the Bible. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that the Old Testament contains passages that could be (and in some cases have been) interpreted as divine endorsements of beatings, race warfare, slavery, stoning to death of rebellious children, and other behaviors that are outrageous to today’s standards. standards. As Shakespeare once wrote, “The devil can quote Scripture to his purpose.”
Punishment, also known as hitting / changing / whipping / corporal punishment, can weaken the survivor’s immune system according to Dr. Frank Putnam of the National Institute of Mental Health and Dr. Martin Teicher of Harvard Medical School. Putnam conducted studies of 170 girls, ages 6-15—half had been subjected to “corporal punishment,” half not—for seven years. Abused girls showed symptoms such as:
o Abnormally high stress hormones, which can kill neurons in areas of the brain that are vital for thinking and memory
o High antibody levels that weaken the immune system
Teicher completed a series of brain studies on 402 children and adults, many of whom had experienced physical abuse. His findings revealed that physical abuse creates:
o Stopped development of the left hemisphere of the brain which can hinder the development of language and logic
o Development of the right hemisphere of the brain (the seat for emotion) at an abnormally early age
The result of a weakened immune system includes more profound as well as rarely recognized physical consequences such as: vaginal, ovarian, prostate, testicular or breast cancer, PMS, MS, fibromyalgia, to name a few of the most significant diseases as a result of surviving physical abuse. Louise Hay in her book Heal Your Body–The Mental Causes for Physical Illness and the Metaphysical Ways to Overcome, cited her own vaginal cancer as an example of a weakened immune system due to physical/sexual abuse and how metaphysical healing can heal the body.
Our laws and cultural values are clear about adults physically assaulting or verbally threatening adults. Such behavior is recognized as criminal and we hold offenders accountable. Why then, when so much is at stake for society, do we accept the muddled thinking and excuses of child abusers – all in the name of religion?
Why do we care about the needs of children only after they have been horribly victimized or become offenders by victimizing others?
The answer is not complicated. People cannot empathize with abused children until they can honestly recognize the abuse from their own childhood experiences and examine the weaknesses of their parents. To the extent that they feel compelled to defend their parents and keep their secrets, they will do the same for others. They will look the other way. They will continue to use the misinterpreted Bible passage. By constantly insisting that they “turned out okay,” they reassure themselves and distract themselves from deeply hidden unpleasant memories.
This is why, when someone says that “hitting/punishment” is abuse, many people react as if a door blocked from infancy has been broken open. This barred, unconscious door prevented them from committing the most dangerous, most unforgivable act of unfaithfulness imaginable, unfaithfulness to their parents. They fear that by opening the door to the truth, they may fall into an abyss – abandoned and cut off from any possibility of reconciliation with their loving parents. Fear is irrational. Denial – of what has been done to you and, now, what you are doing and allowing to be done in this generation – is the current danger and the real sin.
The following books are excellent resources for healthy parents:
-Case Against Spanking, Irwin Hyman
-Without hitting or slacking, Elizabeth Crary
-Instead of Spanking-1001 Alternatives, Vol. 2, Ada Maurer
-Discipline without yelling or hitting, Jerry Wyckoff
-One Hundred and One Alternatives to Moaning, Yelling, or Lumbering, Alvin Price
We are responsible for:
“Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it.” – Sartre
“We are not only responsible for what we do, but also for what we do not do.”
“The worst way you can choose is to choose no way at all.” — Friedrich II
“Every choice we make, every thought and feeling we have, is an act of power that has biological, environmental, social, personal and global consequences.” — Caroline Myss
It is time to do all you can to stop the sanctioned and barbaric practice of child abuse — under the guise of Biblical commandment.
