The 10 Most Elegant Antelope Species of the African Bushveld!

Kudu

The kudu is the second largest species of antelope in the world (behind the eland), reaching up to 1.2 m at the shoulder and weighing up to 270 kg. They are by far one of my most admired antelopes and are always a treat to watch in the wild!

These rather shy browsers are found in bushy and hilly areas and can remain stationary for long periods of time when they feel threatened. Kudu bulls have particularly recognizable long, spiral horns (above). As with most antelope species, females are hornless and relatively smaller in size.

There are two types of kudus: Greater kudus and smaller kudus. The greater kudu is more common, while the lesser kudu is restricted to East Africa. One way to tell the two apart (besides looking at size), is to notice the number of white stripes on the side of the animal’s body. The smaller kudu can have up to 14 stripes, while the larger kudu has only 6 or 7.

Have you ever checked the animal’s ears? They are undeniably big. very funny to watch when they hear interesting sounds! 🙂

Sable

Also one of the largest species of antelope found in Africa. Both sexes have imposing razor-like horns and gorgeous black and white head markings. Males, however, are usually darker, while females and juveniles are a paler chestnut color.

You love animals, but we rarely see them. We only encountered them a few times, in places like Ruaha National Park (Tanzania) and Kafue in Zambia!

Did you know that the samarium’s horns could be up to 154cm long?! Impressive, huh?)

Nyala

Another beautiful, striking antelope that inhabits dense scrub and riparian areas covered with vegetation. The nyala is relatively similar to the kudu and the females are often confused with the bushbuck. Males differ markedly from females in both coat (dark and shaggy) and horns (females have none).

Fleece

The continent’s fourth largest antelope species. Not to be confused with sable. It is lighter in color, has shorter horns with long tasseled ears and a clown mask! Absolutely stunning creature!

Impala

The most common species of African antelope of them all. Known as the “McDonald’s” of the bush for the black and white “M-shaped” markings on the bum, it is the one animal you cannot miss while on safari!

Impalas have acute hearing and are known for their loud snores capable of scaring elephants. They are extremely agile guys and excellent jumpers. The antelope is preyed upon by most large predators: the lion, the leopard, the cheetah, the wild dog, etc. In my opinion it is the most gentle animal of the African savannah!

Gemsbok

When one first thinks of gemsbok (also known as oryx), it is immediately associated with sand dunes and desert areas. As some say, it is “the spirit of the desert embodied in an antelope.” Although arid habitat is usually where the animal is found, it can also be found occasionally in savannah and mopane forests. If you are a fan of these breathtaking antelopes, don’t forget to visit Tsavo National Park in Kenya or the famous Etosha Pans of Namibia.

Waterbuck

A robust, somewhat “overweight” animal found in small herds and dominated by a bull. As their name suggests, waterbucks love water, although they often venture some distance away from it to feed. Two subspecies coexist: the Common Waterbuck with a distinctive white ring on its back (see below) and the Defassa Waterbuck which has a white patch.

You knew that?

Just for fun: do you know why common waterbucks have an elliptical ring around the threshold? No? Continue reading…

When Noah built his Ark, the boat’s toilet seats were painted white. Unfortunately for the waterbuck, he had drunk too much water (as always…), and couldn’t resist the toilet even though the toilet seats weren’t dry yet…very funny I know!:);)

Springbok

“Springs” in the air with pronking action! The Springbok is the only gazelle found below the Zambezi River. It has very good eyesight and is very unusual. It is the symbol of the South African rugby team: the “boke”! Springbok Pronking Video!

Gerenuk

A subtle mix between impala and giraffe, which, like the latter, also happens to eat acacia leaves! The gerenuk is considered a browser and inhabits areas with dry scrub and scrub.

Bushbuck

Attractive medium-sized antelope found mainly around rivers, forests and dense scrub areas. The bushbuck is mainly nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen in the early morning / late afternoon (when undisturbed). Interestingly enough, the bushbuck varies from light to dark brown in color depending on the area it lives in.
