Sharbenau the Squirrel (Juvenile Fiction)

“Sharbenau the Squirrel” by Miriam Pia

Part 1

Sharbenau realized at some point that he was not like the other squirrels in a few ways. In most respects he was a normal squirrel. He grew at the same rate, liked most of the same foods, his tail was bushy like everything else. His temperament also wasn’t that different from many of the others of his tribe.

Sharbenau lived in a large colony of squirrels. They had 3 tribes, 2 of them had 15 families and the other tribe had 9 families. The elders taught the youngsters how to live and get along in the forest where they lived. Like it or not, it became clear that some of the larger squirrels seemed to “do better” than others.

Feeling weird?

There were moments that made Sharbenau very sad. When he was young, this happened more often when he saw someone else get hurt or sick. He hated watching their suffering, but he didn’t want to push them away – he knew that would make him seem cold when he wasn’t. Well, this problem got Sharbenau’s attention for some time.

Once, when another squirrel was injured, he tried to help it. Partly, it just gave the other animal comfort and somehow – he wasn’t even sure how. try to change things. try to help the other person heal. Sharbenau wasn’t sure he was doing any good, but then his grandmother mentioned it to him once. She complimented him. He said to him, “Now my little one, that was very creative and quite kind. That’s a very rare thing, but it’s something to feel good about, rather than bad.”

Sharbenau thought his grandmother meant well, but it was a little strange. The thing is, she had been nice to him when he was feeling a bit sad or lonely or something – she remembered the incident. The squirrel children found that they often had plenty of time to play and have fun as well as learn how to take care of themselves and each other. Most of the time, they were told to stay indoors after dark. The real reason for this was to protect them from danger. There were other animals. The way they saw things made it harder for squirrels to recognize danger during the dark hour. It made it easier for them to get the young people to stay close during these times. Sharbenau felt this made sense and did not fight it. He was actually a very well behaved baby squirrel. Most were, but some of them looked different. For a long time, he observed what happened to different people depending on what they did. There appeared to be 2 main effects among the more adventurous squirrels. Some had a sad fate: they were often injured and many died young in tragedies.

Others had a happy fate. They seemed to be blessed with great energy and talents and able to survive. Thus, Sharbenau developed a new understanding of this type of squirrel. Even so, he did not stray far from the elders. It did not seem to be in his nature to disobey or go against sound advice.

Sharbenau and a crow

One day, when Sharbenau was out climbing a tree in an area where he was allowed, he had a very unusual experience. A large crow, at least twice his size, came quite close – they looked into each other’s eyes. The bird lowered its head and moved it towards the squirrel slowly.

Sharbenau saw this large, sharp, dangerous beak coming towards him, but for some reason he did not feel the usual fear and did not fly away. Suddenly, he stretched out one of his forelegs and smacked the bird in the beak.

Well, after that happened, they both panicked. The squirrel withdrew his hand very suddenly. The bird jerked its head back. this had never happened before! The bird whispered. The squirrel was terrified by the giant dangerous open mouth and the horrible sound. Sharbenau started to scream and scuttled into some branches and ran to safety. There he panted, calmed down, resumed his daily life. The experience stayed with him. Because he remembered it so well, he felt it might have a deep meaning.

After his experience with the crow, Sharbenau tried to help others when someone was hurt or injured. He didn’t do this every time no matter who it was, but he tried. In time, the others started talking to each other about it. They were beginning to think that he might have some kind of power to help them. They wondered if it would work if they tried the same things—if it worked the same way their elders could show them how to find food and what to eat. They also wondered if it was Sharbenau.

One day Sharbenau was out on an excursion. He felt more mature and very proud because he was alone again. In fact, he hadn’t gone far from home. He found a berry bush. He was happy because he found his own meal without help for the first time in a long time. On this special occasion, Sharbenau brought with him a small amount of the branch. A little while after: it seemed a long time, but it might have been two weeks, Sharbenau was with a squirrel who was not feeling well. Spontaneously, Sharbenau hit the other squirrel with the berry branch, shouted 3 times and danced for half a minute. Then, just as suddenly, it stopped. He suddenly felt embarrassed. He looked at the other squirrel and found the other one smiling at him. Sarbena felt the fur on his tail rise. He pulled his tail in and around. Then quickly, Sharbenau found a way to leave.

Later, just 2 days later, there was a new sight. Sharbenau was at the nearest stream to get water. He saw the squirrel that had danced around him and touched it with the branch. The other’s health seemed much improved. Sharbenau the squirrel just watched silently from the shadows. He was beginning to wonder if he had some kind of power after all and wasn’t just imagining it.

Part 2

In fact, the other squirrels in the tribe actually noticed this. It appeared to all of them that Sharbenau had helped the other squirrel to heal. Everyone began to watch Sharbenau a bit more, to observe if anything else “surprising” or “amazing” might happen. At first this made Sharbenau very uncomfortable. Then, he realized he could use that as encouragement to try things a few times. So after that he was more likely to follow his ideas about healing or figure things out. Now it seemed that if he did something strange the other squirrels would also say, “Well, that’s Sharbenau. That’s why.”

Another miracle

One day, Sharbenau was out – again, he was a bit far from the rest of his team. He hadn’t really left the group, or anything.

He was on the side of a tree one day, with his head down on a large oak when another of these “strange events” occurred. Sharbenau sensed the presence of another life form. It was a big creature, very big. His smell was noticeable but not unpleasant. He didn’t know what kind of creature it was from the smell. There was the sound of movement, but the entity moved slowly. Sharbenau decided to stay still. Look down. He looked down at his front legs and felt the strong grip he had on the thick oak bark. This was a very stable situation from what he could tell. Again, the great creature moved.

This time, Sharbenau could look and see some part of him on the ground. It was like nothing he had ever seen before. He flicked his tail back and forth. He smelled the light breeze. There was more traffic. Sharbenau knew he was taking too much of a risk by not running. He had a strange sensation in both his body and mind. This time, another large portion of the creature appeared. It turned out to be really gigantic compared to a squirrel, but Sharbenau thought it was much smaller than the tree it was in. Still, although his tail was shaking slightly, Sharbenau didn’t laugh and didn’t run.

What happened was that the creature started making noises. when Sharbenau wasn’t running yet, it was a small miracle when the creature touched him without causing him any harm. Sharbenau wasn’t sure how to react. He was very pleased, but he wasn’t sure why – probably just because this kind of event had never happened before and might never happen again.

The whole experience only took a few minutes. Then the big creature made different sounds and started to move quickly. The squirrel felt a new kind of pressure on his back, then suddenly scrambled forward, down, and then around and away from the strange creature. He climbed much higher and left. In fact, Sharbenau never looked back.

He told the other squirrels of his tribe. Well, they talked about it so much that the old-timers heard it. Finally, Grandma Squirrel told 2 of them that she thought the creature she had seen and touched him might be a human.

The New Life of Sharbenau

From that moment, no one faced Sharbenau as before. It was strange because the change was in some ways subtle but in other ways obvious. Sharbenau wasn’t exactly sure what it was. Neither did the others, but it was something and everyone knew it. After a long time, the squirrels developed a word for it and began to call Sharbenau a shaman. Little by little, they tried to share this information with the other tribes.

Sharbenau himself felt somewhat strange. Besides, he was just trying to be himself; he was just that squirrel. He loved his family, enjoyed much of his life, and loved the tribal lifestyle. For some reason he was a little different from the others. He was even worried about healing someone again with the berry wand – since it had worked the one time.

The most surprising thing was twofold. First, when Sharbenau returned to the tree where he had encountered the giant creature one day, he sometimes found offerings. The other amazing fact is that for the first time in history, a man realized – but did not understand why this idea arose, that animals can have their own medicine people.
