Game Review – Fire Pro Wrestling Returns
The North American release of Fire Pro Wrestling Returns was on November 13. That’s a little over two years after the Japanese release. Having spent about two solid weeks with the game in my possession, I think I’m in a position to give an unbiased review. I’ve been a long time fan of this series, but I can still recognize its faults. How does Fire pro Wrestling Returns stack up against the most popular competition? Where to start from…
There are no drastic changes to the core Fire Pro gameplay. It’s the same solid wrestling system that fans have long grown accustomed to. Those new to the Fire Pro will need to spend some time getting used to the timing. The combat system punishes button mashers. I would advise beginners to set the COM difficulty to 1 and move up to a harder level. This is one of those games where appreciation is only earned after learning the ins and outs.
The series’ trademark features are tight gameplay and a massive roster. FPR boasts a total of 327 real competitors. To avoid copyright issues, everyone has been given a name change. Vader is called “Saber”, Kenta Kobashi is “Keiji Togashi”, etc. Feel free to rename everyone accordingly. You also have the ability to change the outfit for default characters. You don’t have to sacrifice one of the 500 edit slots (CAW) when your favorite wrestler changes gimmicks.
FPR’s all-star roster includes wrestlers, boxers and mixed martial artists from around the world. Puroresu legends such as Giant Baba, Satoru Sayama (original Tiger Mask) and Jushin “Thunder” Lyger are eligible. As always the default roster is dominated by Puro wrestlers. Some of the well-known fighters in American wrestling/UFC fans include Bret Hart, Sting, Andre the Giant, Petey Williams, Mirco Cro Cop and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
A new addition to the lineup is a “corner to center” attack. When your opponent is knocked down in the middle of the ring, you can fly into the corner to set up a spear, super kick, or some other maneuvers. This adds a bit more drama and precision to matches that involve characters setting up these attacks in a certain way. Because of this new feature, you can create an exact Shawn Michaels or Bill Goldberg if you were so inclined.
Finally a traditional steel cage match was added. Players can use weapons such as barbed wire or the cage to inflict pain on others. Other match types include the S-1 (boxing, fists only), the Gruesome (a 12-sided UFC-inspired cage) and the Electrified Barbed Wire Exploding Deathmatch. While he has hell in a cell, Japanese hardcore wrestlers hurl each other into electrified boards covered in leather that shreds with barbed wire. It’s different, but still fun
Notable buzz features include Ref editing, Belt Edit and Ring/Logo Edit. There is a GM mode called “Match Maker”, but it is very limited. All you do is set up matches between fighters and score based on the percentage of crowd reaction to the match. There are weird special events that happen during the match maker that barely expand beyond its limitations. For some inexplicable reason, created wrestlers are prohibited from being used in Match Maker.
The presentation is nothing special. The menus can be fixed, but accessing some functions can be a chore at times FPR’s 2D graphics remind me of arcade games like Wrestlefest. The character sprites aren’t high resolution, but they are large and detailed. Spike could have easily recycled graphics from Fire Pro Wrestling Z. Instead they created new sprites and revived some pre-existing moves. Some animations look a little robotic, but they’re pretty smooth.
I’m sad to say that Spike has once again mapped the weapon pickup button to the run button. Want to grab a fluorescent tube from the corner while playing an exploding barbed wire match? Make sure you are close enough to the pipes in question. Otherwise, you’ll run into the tightropes, and thus end up looking like a complete fool. It doesn’t break the game or anything, but such neglect of the R2 button has me dumbfounded. Overall, this is one of my biggest problems with FPR.
I do not give numerical ratings or points to my reviews. If I were the guy doing this, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns would probably get a 91. It’s the best in the series, but like every other game it has its flaws. Even so-called classic games that get perfect scores from other reviewers have some bugs or glitches. I recommend this game to anyone who is into professional wrestling or the UFC. You don’t have to be into Puro to like FPR, the unique gameplay and customization options are more than enough to keep people interested.
