Spontaneous Combustion of Humans, Animals or Objects – What Really Happens in These Cases?

Spontaneous combustion of an unusual kind is a phenomenon where people, animals or objects, which are not easily flammable, seem to start burning by themselves and sometimes burn almost completely. It also often seems to happen through an internal energy. Often flammable objects nearby, or even the person’s clothes, do not catch fire, which is often portrayed as mysterious.

The phenomenon is highly controversial. It is true, however, that sometimes persons or animals are found dead in a very burnt condition, without any apparent external source of heat.

Sometimes they have seen people, animals and objects spontaneously combust, or people have experienced it and can tell about it themselves. In these cases the fire usually looks violent and dramatic. But in most of these cases the fire has stopped on its own or gone out, and most of them have only resulted in less superficial injuries, but some have been fatal because vital organs have been injured.

Cases of animal fur spontaneously catching fire are numerous, but in most of these cases the fire is extinguished before the animal is seriously injured.

Most victims of the phenomenon are elderly, overweight and in poor health. They often live alone and are often heavy smokers or alcoholics. It is therefore those people who are likely to handle heat sources carelessly. Since fat contains a lot of energy, overweight people have more substance in their bodies to fuel the fire.

One property of these phenomena is easily understood. If a human or animal body burns because with energy from within or without, a lot of water evaporates, which will prevent the environment from catching fire, which explains the often unexpected unburnt clothing or other nearby objects.

In all well-documented cases where a person has been seen to start burning suddenly, the fire has been shown to start from the outside, despite the myth that the fire started from the inside. There is a story from the USA where a woman seemed to spontaneously breathe a raging fire, coming out of her, from her mouth. The fire was extinguished, but it died after a few days. But a hospital examination revealed that the fire had spread to her face around her mouth and that she died of inflammation of the lungs, caused by material from the fire she inhaled.

In many cases the wick effect is given as an explanation. If any part of the clothing catches fire caused by a small source of fire, such as a cigarette glow, the skin underneath may heat up so that the melted fat seeps out and the clothing or dried skin absorbs the fat like a wick. Steadily leaking fat will burn and other body elements in the part will burn with it. This slow release of burning material will continue until much of the body is consumed if the person is unconscious for some reason.

Often some of the clothing or pieces of furniture on which the person is placed are made of highly flammable material and it often appears that a strong fire has started in this material and then spread to the person and the process could then continue with effect wick.

There will also typically be a chimney effect where fresh air will be drawn towards the fire and used air will rise towards the ceiling, which will keep the fire burning.

Microwave radiation from some physical or technical source may have provided the energy for the process in some cases. Creeping electrical currents from an overloaded or faulty grid can cause a fire where it passes, and if this happens to a person, the person can be struck and start a continuous burning process due to the current or the wick effect.

Ball lightning is probably involved in some cases. Lightning has often been seen to stick to objects and sometimes to people resulting in fire or explosion. In the cases observed, the fire was extinguished before serious damage was caused or stopped on its own. But in some unwitnessed cases, the fire may have continued due to the wick effect, and some ball lightning may contain enough energy to cause extensive burns as well.

Continuous electric currents from the ground to the atmosphere have been witnessed, often inside houses, in effect a slow type of lightning. These rarely cause any damage at all, but if they happen to pass through a person, they can knock the person out and the current can become strong enough to cause burns on their own or a fire that otherwise continues.

There is a story from Norway where two people sitting at either end of a couch in a country house saw such a flame-like stream rise from the middle of the couch. Nothing got hurt, but if a person was sitting in the middle of the couch, they could channel that current which could then get strong enough to cause a burn.

If there is some bacteriological or metabolic process in the body that produces highly flammable volatile compounds, such as methane or ethane, and these dissolve in body fat and sebaceous secretions and accumulate over a long period of time, the surface of the body and much of the interior may to become highly flammable. Some ignition source on the outside can easily start a fire, and the fire will soon dig a deeper hole from which the hydrocarbons and grease will evaporate and burn like a torch. Some cases witnessed of parts of a person’s body suddenly catching fire may be due to this mechanism.

Some believe that the brain can cause an uncontrolled metabolic process that heats up the body and thus begins to burn. But such a metabolic process would cause combustion to start from within if that were the primary source of energy, which it never seems to be, despite claims. Therefore this explanation is unlikely.

There is a theory that some kind of internal nuclear reaction may be causing the phenomenon, perhaps some kind of cold fusion. The problem with this explanation is also that it would cause the burning to start from the inside, which really never seems to happen.

Still another theory is that internal psychological or psychic energy, chi or kundanlini, also released by some control process in the brain or mind, can consume the body. There actually seems to be some evidence that such an action can cause a fire in the environment, and some people seem to be able to start fires this way, either intentionally or out of control. But then again such mystical energies could cause the process to begin from within, if they were the source of the energy. Also, the energy released in this way always seems to be very small and can only ignite an object, such as a piece of paper, when it is focused.

Perhaps, however, these three mentioned mechanisms can heat points on the skin, due to an optical focus of the released energy, to a temperature where this point starts to burn and then continues to burn through the wick effect or other external processes.

There is however another and very scary explanation that we unfortunately have to consider for some cases:

Some of the offerings for spontaneous human combustion may be guinea pigs for experiments with microwave or laser weapons, and some societies may use such weapons to get rid of people the authorities don’t want there.

We know that microwave weapons exist for crowd control, and we know that some variants are already used by police forces for crowd control, but usually only to produce an extremely unpleasant heat. Presumably these weapons can also be used in a much stronger mode that causes a person to catch fire.

Military laboratories may use selected individuals as test subjects and prefer to select individuals who are socially disadvantaged. Such tests may be the cause of some of the spontaneous combustion of people, animals or objects that we read about in the media or some unexpected fires.
