Tips to Naturally Get Rid of Fleas in Your Home and on Your Dog

This first tip was told to me by an owner of a unique natural pet store.

It is recommended before you go on a trip so that you do not return to a house infested with fleas.

1) Wash your dog with a natural flea soap. Leave the soap on the dog for ten to fifteen minutes. This will help suffocate the fleas. When the time is up, thoroughly water the dog’s coat to suffocate the fleas. (You can also wash your dog with regular liquid soap.)

2) After drying your dog, wash his collar thoroughly with soap and water. When worn, the collar heats up underneath which helps the eggs hatch.

3) Now take the dog outside. Sprinkle baking soda on ALL carpets the dog has access to (unless you or a family member has allergies, then ask your vet to do this). Keep children away from these areas. Don’t be stingy with the baking soda. Sweep the baking soda off the carpet with a broom. Leave it on for six hours. If you’re doing it this summer and your kids are home, take them on a ride. While you are outside the fleas will be suffocated by the baking soda. Vacuum the carpet after the specified time. In the summer months I do this routine once a month. I find it keeps the fleas away. If you don’t want to use baking soda, vacuum frequently all areas where the dog walks and sleeps. To limit fleas on carpet, keep your dog on wooden or tile floors.

4) Frequently wash dog bedding, soft dog toys, rugs and human bedding if the dog sleeps in beds.

Bathe the dog every two weeks unless the dog has dry skin problems.

A vet once told me that if fleas don’t have live people or animals to feed on, they will die after seven days. Here’s a tip from this same vet: For homes with central heating- In early summer turn up your heat. Leave the house (no adults, children or animals in a warm house.) This will cause the flea eggs to hatch. Come home in the evening, turn off the fire and sweep away the fleas and their eggs. (NEVER leave the house with the water heater on!)

Last note: From the natural pet store I bought both Brewers Yeast and Brewers Yeast plus Garlic to give to my dogs to get rid of fleas naturally. Both worked just like that, and my dog’s tummy didn’t like the yeast. Although a chlorinated pool isn’t very natural, my Labrador had fewer fleas as seen playing in the pool. Also note, if you give your dog the type of flea medicine where you dab it on his back and your dog swims A LOT, my vet says it will wash off after so much swimming. So keep that in mind.

Tell a friend about these natural ways to control the flea population in your home and on your dog.
