Through Katrina’s Eyes poems from an animal Rescuer’s Soul

Fascinating Read … Highly Recommended … 5 stars

The summary

Author/Animal Activist Says “This Book of Remembrance is dedicated to every victim of Katrina, human and non-human, living and dead, who endured a hellish nightmare most of us can only imagine. and to the many compassionate souls who rushed to help them, in whatever way they could.”

Through Katrina’s Eyes, Poems from an Animal Rescuer’s Soul is a collection of poetic works that begin with Immanuel Kant’s haunting words “Our eyes are the windows to our souls.” Poet Kostro’s first offering is Through Katrina’s Eyes, where he confronts the reader with the horror, the terror, the death of hope, and the utter and utter despair for so many of these four-legged creatures devastated by Katrina. The creatures were sometimes left behind by those who thought they would soon return, others were left behind by so-called human rescuers who insisted that the animals could not accompany their owners from homes to supposed safety.

The Old Man and his Dog, and the Woman and her Daughter are full of the aching hope that we humans hold, and to which our creatures respond so well. Other offerings include the Katrina Highway. Pet Rescue Camp, Message in a Bottle and Mangy Dog. A sweet loving dog is introduced in the words of One Eyed Jack, and a fiercely determined cat comes to mind as we read The Old Traveler. The joy of reunion is offered in A Vet and His Pet, while the heartache of being torn from his master’s loving arms by a heartless “rescuer” before he too is returned to his loving owners is presented in Heavenly Touch, the happiness that renews with adoption is found in the words of Get Shorty. Poet Kostro’s own adoption record is featured in Autumn in St. Louis, Eddie, Tater, and A Flower Blooms in Winter. The plight of the lucky survivors, “left behind,” is presented in Help and Paradise Lost, where author Kostro confronts the reader with the urgent need of so many who are now rescued but live in pens and need creature homes. Kostro’s poem closes with the poignant wish “we rescuers pray that our government is now much wiser. We pray that the owners will never have to leave them behind again.’

Writer Kostro’s poetry and love of animals are well known to this reviewer. Kostro includes not only his own poetic works, but also some information about his volunteering skills in the rescue effort that took place after pet owners were forced to evacuate and leave behind the companions they shared their lives with. Kostro also includes quotes from a number of well-known figures from history and modern times about creatures and the role they share in our lives.

Through Katrina’s Eyes, Poems from an Animal Rescuer’s Soul is a compelling read, bringing the reader into both the desperation and optimism of the rescuers and the confused, worried ones left behind. The Poems are not always an easy read, as we find discouragement and despair portrayed in stark realism. The joy of reunification or adoption restores the reader’s ability to better cope with the harshly depicted despair.

Great poetry, great message. A book for everyone. Creature lovers will need no encouragement to buy, read and re-read. Those for whom creatures are just something we humans have “dominion” over may begin to better understand the early writers who actually said that creatures are here, to which we smug “intelligent” beings will demonstrate compassionate care.

Great addition to your personal reading shelf, school library, therapist’s shelf, and learning readers. A portion of the proceeds will go to pet rescue efforts.

Enjoyed reading, happy to recommend.
