The Importance of Giving Without Boundaries
We live in a stressful world where it can be difficult at times to keep up with the financial demands that life demands. Today is a “New Era” a new era for Americans to begin “Giving Without Borders”. With our ever-changing economy forcing people to make important decisions about their finances, health care and more – people need hard to find resources now more than ever. From the poor to the rich – everyone is affected by a faltering economy. But our nation’s poor bear the brunt of the economic decline. That being said, as I combed through the pages of the “Giving Without Boundaries” help guide – I remember the heartwarming offering of one: “Mama Brown” from Oakland, California, a real estate professional who made a promise. Mrs. Brown kept it to send disadvantaged children to college. Such acts of kindness can make a difference in the life of a poor child. Mum Brown – who was making less than $50,000 a year at the time she made the pledge – said she had “never heard a kid say they wanted to grow up to be a drug dealer”.
If we follow in Mother Brown’s footsteps, then we will do so in a spirit that will not be questioned. We keep our eyes on the main course and aim which is to help where help is needed. As I compile the pages of this guide – I have come across many brave acts of kindness that stand as a constant reminder of how each of us can begin to help others by starting with the words: “We Can. We Will. And, We Will.”
It is a very kind idea to make a difference in someone else’s life. From the homeless to the ‘Green Movement’ to helping people with Muscular Dystrophy and other illnesses – we can all do something to help where needed. Even something as charitable as taking out a sick neighbor’s trash – can put a smile on a sick person’s face. From helping a fellow human being to helping conserve energy – there are so many ways you’ve probably never thought of before. I hope this new help guide will be informative enough to open your eyes to various opportunities that you may have never considered before.
As we look beyond our personal needs to reach out to help others, there are many ways to begin the helping process. Many times the cost of helping others can be free. The Giving Without Boundaries help guide will be a great starting home for considering which charities you would like to serve. This comprehensive guide will open the door for you to learn about many charities, their mission statements and how they can best serve you. Take your time and plan your volunteer attack. If you are a college student – you may want to base your giving methodology around your career interests and internship opportunities. And as you look through the pages of this book – some charities may be familiar to you and others will open your heart to new ways of giving. Remember to keep track of the companies and/or organizations you choose to support by copying the forms in the back of this book for your personal use. You will soon find that giving back is a great way for young people to gain work experience while helping others. It’s also a good way for new college graduates to gain valuable training and experience to land the career they most desire.
In writing this guide I discovered that all one needs to do to make a significant difference in someone’s life is to be able to see the need and then open their heart to help. A free spirit towards a new gesture of helping your fellow man or woman, child, animal or living environment is rewarding. If “What Goes Around Comes Around”, one day the ways you give will be returned to you. Few of us know what life’s true destiny will be. To jumpstart your future – do unto others and see how good the results will feel for you.
For example, when you help a homeless person by giving him some food and he smiles at you, nothing is more heartwarming. Or when you’re mentoring a young teenager who doesn’t know how to look for answers, your wisdom may be the key to what they’re looking for in life. If you rescue an animal with a bruised limb, you feel happy to help where it is most needed. The results of your efforts will indeed bear great fruit, however you choose to use it. because you have now planted a seed in this teenager’s life to make a difference. Seeing an adult read for the first time is a glorious turning point for a better future for that person. All these things tend to make us want to do more in the name of humanity. While speaking on these lines, I would like to share a very memorable personal experience. Later you will read some ways that others have changed the course of their lives to help someone else. Whether it’s a momentary or a long-term commitment to volunteering at a food bank or hospital – giving without limits always leads to double success. One of the most thoughtful things someone did for me was the epitome of “Giving Without Limits.” The selfless act of a stranger touched me in a way that changed my life forever. And, it’s the inspiration behind this upcoming book. Here’s what happened.
My start in life was not always so pleasant. I was the sixth of sixteen children. My father left home when I was a small child. With a small army of children to care for – my mother never had time for me. My maternal grandmother died when I was only ten years old and my paternal grandmother died earlier than that. Needless to say – I was very lonely in a large family. For many years I worked hard and wondered when someone would just care about me. And later in life, I discovered that many people had opened their hearts to me who were not family members. So, with that admission – I am happy to say that I have been touched by the kind acts of individuals who have helped me from the bottom of my heart. Some of these people didn’t know me. but, they saw the need and provided answers where I thought there were none. And one kind act has the measure to stay with me for the rest of my life. And, this is the act of “Giving Without Boraries” that I want to share with you.
A few years ago – I was working as a business consultant in downtown Oakland, California. My boss had sent me on a rush errand in downtown Oakland, California. So I ran out of my office on a beautiful sunny weekday leaving my bag under my desk in a locked drawer. After finishing the errands for my boss, I was tired. Instead of walking back to the office, I took public transportation. So on this lovely spring day I walked into San Pablo thinking I would just catch the AC Transit back to my business office. My assistant had told me she loved taking the bus around town, I thought this would be a great day to ride the bus back to work. Later, I sat at the bus stop next to a homeless man sleeping on the bench. The unkempt stranger was wrapped tightly in a mouse-colored tarp as he slept on the shattered wooden bench. As soon as I sat next to him he opened his tired blue eyes and said hello. I immediately got up and apologized for interrupting his sleep.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you up,” I said. The tired man smiled at me with red, tired eyes. He then turned back to continue his sleep. It was a nice sunny day in Oakland, CA and I was glad it didn’t rain on this poor guy. Soon the green, white and orange AC Transit bus pulled up to the red curb. And that’s when I realized I had no money to get on the bus. The driver opened the electric door and I said, “I forgot my bag. I’m sorry you had to stop. Go ahead,” I said. Just before the driver closed the door – the tired, elderly homeless man sat up and struggled to fish a crumpled bill out of his dirty checkered shirt pocket.
“Take this ma’am,” he said. Tears immediately rolled down my cheeks. That was the nicest gesture I had ever seen. “I can’t do that…” I said, worried that this man might need his food money later. “I insist,” said the kind man. Everyone from the bus driver to the bus passengers were touched by this man’s kind gesture and we all waved to him from the bus. Suddenly a spark had come into his eyes and now he was sitting up and waving us frantically as the bus traveled further down the busy street. When I got back to the office, it was hard to forget the nice guy. Later, I told my colleagues about the nice homeless guy at the bus stop and what he did. The next day – when some of my work group got back on the bus at the same time I was there the day before, we traveled with blankets, water and food hoping to see the nice guy – but he wasn’t there. For a week we all returned to the bus stop hoping to see the nice man we never saw again. The generosity of this stranger formed the bond that changed my life. His kind gesture will remain etched in my heart forever. Now every time I help people like that kind gentleman helped me, I remember how much we can all do for our fellow man.
Today, as I sat on my rock and contemplated the fine man I mentioned above – I thought about what my next book would be. It wasn’t long before I knew I wanted to write a book about going back. Some of the best memories of my life have to do with giving. There are many ways we can make a difference in someone’s life just by taking the time to help. I’m not a rich man, and like most Americans, I’m only one paycheck away from being tested. I struggle and try to hang in there like everyone else, but I am committed to finding some time in my life to reach out to others as others have reached out to me. As you read the case examples that make up the introduction to the grant proposals, see which organization is the best fit and donate your aid today.
