Puppy Adopting – Think Twice When Someone Offers Puppies For Free!

You, or you and your family, have decided to adopt a puppy as your next family pet. When you contact local dog breeders, you are disappointed to hear what they charge. You know enough to avoid pet store adoptions when the dogs might come from puppy mills, but then someone says they know someone is getting rid of the puppies for free… Let’s face it – we all love a lot. And compared to what they want for purebred dogs, especially any popular breed of puppy, at first glance it sounds like the perfect solution for your next family pet – but is it?

In some cases, getting puppies for free is a smart move and you will be happy with your decision for years and years. But the decision can haunt you for a while if you’re not careful. So many people are looking for small dogs for adoption that you have to wonder why anyone would give away spitz, pugs or shih tzu dogs. Most people who adopt a puppy aren’t necessarily looking for purebreds, so even those of mixed parentage still get a fair dollar. And the same goes for medium-sized dogs like greyhounds, although the biggest demand is for the smaller dogs. So why give away puppies for free?

Your first concern is the animal’s health—and if you can’t find out its parentage, you don’t know what medical traits and concerns are endemic to your prospective adopter’s dog breeds. Additionally, has the dog been spayed or neutered? Has a qualified, licensed veterinarian examined this cute little dog to make sure there is no parvo, heartworm, or other common puppy diseases? Does it even have a flea collar? Not all puppy illnesses are apparent to the untrained eye or even a professional without standard lab tests, etc.

Another concern when adopting a puppy is what training, if any, has been given and what socialization has been given? Are they used to being held by children and playing with them? Have you ever dealt with puppy training or housebreaking? Are you sure that an older dog might not be a better choice for your family – at least one old enough to be already trained?

And if you don’t know the puppy’s breed, you need to be sure of the puppy’s temperament – or what it will develop into as the dog matures. Do you have young children at home or plan to one day? If so, you need to ensure that the family pets and the entire household can coexist successfully!

Yes, on the surface adopting a dog for free – especially getting puppies for free – seems like an ideal situation. But in reality, paying what it takes to adopt a dog shelter or dog society like an ASPCA adoption or an RSPCA adoption can turn out to cost a lot less in terms of money, heartache and time. So think twice when you’re offered when someone gives puppies away for free, and consider whether you wouldn’t be better off with a humane adoption from society – and whether a puppy adoption is right for you or whether you should adopt an older dog.
