How To Tell If Your Pet Reptile Likes You

I would say that most herpetologists might not be too concerned about whether or not their reptile likes them. They usually have a large collection of snakes, lizards, turtles and even frogs. They may appear to be well cared for on a physical level and neglected on a personal level. Reptiles are also known as “exotic pets”. The reptile trade is horrible and many people, myself included, do not support this trade. About ninety-five percent of animals will die due to poor transportation and inadequate care on their journey to and from different countries.

Like children, pets are a reflection of their home life and their happiness and contentment will largely depend on the quality time you are prepared to give them. Reptiles are very ancient creatures that go way back in history. All reptiles are ectothermic, so they show affection a little differently than a cat or dog. In the wild they can almost stop their heart beating. They have the ability to slow down their metabolism in the winter to hibernate, this is also known as dirt.

I have had a pet lizard since he was just two weeks old, he is a happy and content mischievous twelve year old. It behaves similar to a dog in slow motion. He is tamed, for example when I call him he will respond normally by turning his body and looking in the direction of my voice. I have to call his name several times before he comes to me. Reptiles do not need to be fed daily. They can go for weeks without food, especially if they are hibernating. How do you know you like your reptile?

They will feel comfortable around you. If you have formed a really successful bond, they will allow you to hand feed them without them biting you. This is the strongest indication that they have accepted you as their trusted friend.

When my pet wants attention, he pokes his head out of his enclosure, indicating he wants to go for a run. Now he has decided he wants to eat his mashed vegetables from a plastic spoon once a week. This unusual habit came about after he underwent abdominal surgery two years ago to remove a fatty tumor. He looks forward to being spoon fed and knows when I prepare his food. One would think he was almost psychic.

My snake “Tilly” used to pull my glasses when she wanted my attention to squish my face similar to what a cat does. He always chose the most inconvenient moment to do this. I never avoided her. I loved their cold affection and felt honored that my pet allowed me to bond so much with them. Not many reptile handlers can say they’ve been this close to a reptile. Building a bond of trust between you and your reptile takes time, patience and consistency, especially with reptiles. These cold-blooded beauties have fascinated me for many years. I have watched their antics in the wild marveling at their unusual ability to change color so quickly and often due to their mood and the different temperatures of the day. They are very different animals and are well adapted for survival in the wild. As a reptile handler I have learned that you can never own them, you share your time and passionate passion with them. I have a wonderful bond with my lizard Abbott.
