The Moral Necessity of Veganism

Join me in imagining a planet where this happens – billions of cats and dogs are raised in unpleasant conditions, killed and then eaten by humans. Now, imagine that these dogs and cats feel as much pain, if not more, than humans, that the scientists of the planet have shown how harmful their consumption is to humans, and that the process of growing and killing them destroys them the planet’s ecosystem. Take a moment to think about this.

Now, I’m sure the picture I painted won’t sit well with most of you. You may have been struck by the cruelty, the waste, or the breathtaking arrogance. You may have felt a feeling of indignation, pity or disgust. You may have wondered how such a state of affairs was allowed to be, let alone continue.

The problem is that this planet exists. Every year approximately fifty billion innocent creatures are enslaved, tortured and killed. They are eaten by humans, resulting in ill health. Our planet, Earth, is being destroyed along the way. The power of language and social narratives, such as cultural and religious tradition, has led people to view some of our fellow creatures, such as pigs and cows, as deserving of an early and painful death, while others, such as cats and cows , dogs, as a family. People are used to this view and thus endure. It seems, then, that Orwell’s famous dystopian dictum “all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others” contains a more literal truth than is commonly understood.

Now, as strange and unnatural as our meat-eating situation is, I think it’s pretty easily explained – for thousands of years humans have been killing and eating other animals to survive. Two of the basic building blocks of human life, protein and fat, were often difficult to obtain from plant sources, and killing a large animal could sustain a family, or even a community, for some time. That made sense. Then, about ten thousand years ago, many people exchanged this “hunter-gatherer” lifestyle for an easier version of it – the agricultural one. This logic is also simple – why spend all day running around trying to kill animals with a spear when some species could be tamed and killed easily? The problem is that logic stuck while much of the world changed.

We now know about animal sentience and cognition, and thus their capacity to suffer. The farming and slaughter industry causes unimaginable emotional and physical pain to literally billions of creatures. They corral them, castrate them, label them, rape them and kill them. I defy anyone to explain how, in many cases, this is not the case.

We now know the damage that the body and their secretions do to the human body – the chances of heart attack, stroke, cancer, dementia, arthritis, diabetes and obesity are not slightly increased.

We now know the damage this industry is doing to the planet – ecosystem disruption in the form of abnormally high rates of birth and death of species, excess methane and vast tracts of forest and fields rendered barren and vast supplies of grain used for livestock. Now we know a lot. So why are we still living like our Stone Age ancestors, who didn’t have a greengrocer down the road?

If every person on earth adopted the vegan lifestyle tomorrow, we would be better off – there would be much less pain, much less disease, and much less planetary damage, not to mention more fertile land and more economical methods of growing and distributing food. The problem is, and I know this because I had the opinion myself until I was twenty-five, the vegan lifestyle is generally thought of as weird: unhealthy and restrictive. But the fact is, as I hope some of you know/will know, the exact opposite is true. A simple purchase of the book “1000 Vegan Recipes” or a simple watch of the Russia Today interview with Dr. Neil Barnard will show this.

I’ve been vegan for almost two years now, after a three-month on and off transition period, and I consider it the best thing I’ve ever done. I’ve lost weight, have more energy, and no longer have that very distant but very nagging voice in the back of my mind telling me my body doesn’t feel right. I find it easy to find vegan substitutes like sausages and burgers, I find it easy to have vegan options in restaurants, especially in Indian, Thai and Italian places, and I’m always learning new and delicious meals to cook. Some of my new homemade favorites include chickpea coconut milk curry, spicy peanut butter noodles, and Brazilian banana mango stew. Just watch your protein (60g a day – good sources are nuts, tofu and flaxseed), your fat (70g, dark chocolate and coconut milk) and B12 (0.0015mg – milk soy, marmite and supplements) every day can easily become vegan.

So come brothers – look within and search your consciences. Are you ready to obey morality, obey nature, and help pull the plug on the disgusting industry that convinced you not to obey them in the first place?
