How to Get Rid of Leather Smell
Skin odors can be relatively easy to deal with on a small scale, but on a large scale they can seem downright impossible. Good quality leather will smell quite strongly for several years, really. So the real question to ask is: Are you sure you want to remove the leather smell from your leather goods? Some people find the smell of leather rather sexy and it is a good indication that your leather is of high caliber. Who doesn’t want to have that leather smell in their leather goods?
But to each his/her own, and if you prefer your leather product (whether it’s a jacket, car upholstery, sofa or even your bag) to smell like something altogether, follow the tips and advice below. For what it’s worth, you have something made of animal skin. You should probably expect it to smell like animal skin.
Removing skin odor
* The only true cure (pardon the pun) for leathery calf is age. expect the smell to go away as the leather ages, that is. You could probably cover it with something else, but if you put something on the skin it will probably take longer for the smell to go away.
* Masking agents are often used to try to take care of problem odors. The problem with a masking agent is that it does just that, it “masks” or hides the smell of the skin. won’t remove it.
Masking agents are often oil-based and can leave a residue on the materials being treated. Masking agents can also cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals, such as runny nose and itchy eyes. A masking agent will also wear off over time and the original leather smell is likely to return, so use with caution.
Potpourri, air fresheners, The Body Shop Scents, a specially scented shampoo, perfumes, lemon juice and anything else are just a few of the many examples you can use to cover up animal skin stench.
* You may want to go to a tack (horse supply) store if there is one nearby and ask them for help. There are all kinds of skin conditioners and cleansers, and some of them can help mask the smell. Murphy’s oil soap, which is always what cowboys used to clean saddles and boots, can also work (as well as make the leather shiny), but again, many of these same cowboys usually try to keep the smell of leather!
* On a small scale, leather odors can be eliminated by simply placing the offending garment or leather product in an airtight container of baking soda for a few days. This remedial treatment, however, may or may not work with that particular smell and is certainly not feasible on a large scale.
* Here’s another baking soda trick. put your leather in a bag/pillow case. Pour some amount of bicarbonate of soda into it. Fasten the bag up, give it a good shake, and then leave it in there for at least twenty-four hours. The baking soda will help absorb some of the odors.
* You can also put your leather in a plastic bag with crumpled newspaper for a few days. it should absorb the smell. This is also part of the reason why some shoe stores put newspaper inside their leather shoe products (besides that the shoe avoids warping due to its hollow interior).
* Activated charcoal can work just as well as the newspaper method, but you don’t want it touching your leather item because it will damage and stain the surface.
* You can also spread the jacket with ¼ cup white vinegar in a bucket or sink. Mop your favorite leather jacket with the solution. Then rinse, reapply the vinegar solution, then rinse once more and hang to dry somewhere out of direct sunlight, as heat can damage the leather.
The vinegar will soften and clean the leather and remove odors, or at least when its sourness is gone from your leather item. You can do this occasionally or when it gets very dirty.
* You can also put pandan leaf on your smelly leather item. Pandan leaves (P. amaryllifolius) are used in Southeast Asian cooking to add a distinct flavor to rice and curry dishes such as nasi lemak, kaya (“jam”) preserves, and desserts such as pandan cake.
The fresh leaves are usually torn into strips, tied into a knot for easy removal, placed in the cooking liquid and then removed at the end of cooking. In some places you can buy dried leaves and bottled extract.
* You can also substitute Febreze for most cleaners here. Febreze uses a chemical compound called cyclodextrin that has been used in household cleaning and storage products for some time.
The sugar-like substance doesn’t necessarily “clean up” skin odors, but it acts like absorbent baking soda or crumpled newspaper, helping to remove skin odor.
* You can also soak leather garments in a bucket of bleach, rubbing alcohol or ammonia solution for about an hour. Then you will find that the bad smell has been replaced by a wonderful hospital smell that will surely attract the nostrils of young gentlemen. A skin conditioner may need to be reapplied afterwards.
Here are some words of caution, however. Be sure to do some color fastness testing on the leather to make sure it won’t fade due to the bleach. It would also be advisable to use oxygen bleach instead of bleach to prevent fading and drying in the first place.
What is the difference between Full Grain, Top Grain, Genuine and Bonded Leather?
All leather is not created equal and it is important to understand the differences when purchasing leather goods. Leather is a natural material. It’s strong, breathable, insulates and molds to your body. It is a combination of beauty and power. How beautiful and how strong, however, is affected by the source, cut and process of the leather.
* Full Grain Leather: This is the best leather money can buy. It is taken from the top layer of the skin and shows the natural marks and grains of the skin. The natural surface of full grain leathers shines and beautifies with use. Full Grain Leather polishes over time.
This is the excellent leather used in thick leather goods and leather accessories. Top quality cow and water buffalo hides are extremely strong and durable. It is used in luxurious briefcases and expensive saddles and bridles.
This type of skin has the most ‘muscat’ of all other types. This sought after (or not so sought after) scent makes it stand out from all the rest.
* Top Grain Leather: It is the second highest grade of leather. The top grain leather is separated from the top layer of imperfect leather and sanded and finished. Top grain leather does not shine or become beautiful with use, but is as strong and durable as full grain leather.
* Bonded Leather: Bonded Leather is the bottom part of the leather. The suede scraps are ground together with glue and resurfaced in a process similar to making vinyl. Bonded leather is weak and wears quickly with use.
* Genuine leather: Produced from the layers of leather that remain after the top is separated for the best grades. These weaker down layers are known as suede. (Not to be confused with the fuzzy finish also referred to as “suede.”) The surface of suede is usually finished to look like a higher quality. They can be smooth or rough. Caution: The inferior quality of genuine leather becomes apparent with use.
