The Blue Tree Monitor – Varanus Macrae

An interesting reptile is Varanus Macraei or Blue Tree Monitor. From the same family as the Tree Monitor reptiles, the Blue is a brilliant black with scattered blue scales, forming spots that may in turn form bands across the back. The tip of the snout is light blue and the lower jaw, white. The underside of the legs is uniformly pale turquoise. They prefer to lead a solitary life but do well in pairs.

This reptile can grow to as upwards to 40 inches (from head to tail) with 2/3 of the length being from the tail. The snout of the Blue Tree Monitor is almost white along with the belly. You can differentiate the sex by the jaw. Males have a bent lower jaw (slight) and the female has a nearly straight jaw. Seeing a Blue Tree Monitor for the first time might remind you of a dinosaur, but it is a strikingly beautiful reptile.

Housing

Suggested tank size to accommodate growth is eight foot long. Place cork on the walls, as the animals love to climb. Reptibark for substrate is a good move so it stays moist. Forget plants as they die but cork pieces around their home are good. Use an active UV Heat bulb and a regular 100-watt bulb. You will be able to provide nice heat spots for the animals to lie in several times a day at about 114 degrees. Average temperature is about 80 degrees through the tank and suggested light for the tank is about 12 hours a day. Mist twice a day to maintain high humidity as they are a tropical animal that love the heat and moist air. You can also decrease ventilation to get the humidity up where it needs to be.

Feeding

Live grasshoppers are a treat along with rodents. You can also use crickets. You can feed 4-5 times a week. It is suggested to powder the food with calcium and vitamins twice a week, and have a nice bowl of water in the tank at all times.

Activity Check

The Blue Tree Monitor is a nervous reptile so if you can go with an even bigger home, they will enjoy it. If they demonstrate timidity and behavior that is lazy, increase the humidity. Do not handle without gloves and handle only when necessary so you don’t stress them. Join forums on line that maintain monitors and study them well before you invest.
