Food Storage Prep – A Simple Guide to Emergency Food Storage

I get 30 – 50 emails a day which is great because I love hearing from you guys and gals especially when you make my head swell with words of praise and agreement. Many readers are looking for advice on one topic or another, and while I try to answer everyone, sometimes I get caught up and lose an email in the chaos. If I don’t respond in time, please be patient, I’ll probably catch up in a few days.

The most common research concerns food storage. It seems that so much has been written on the subject that some people get lost in the mountain of words and confused as to what, how and how much. Although I am not the authority on the study of food storage, I have acquired enough expertise through my own efforts to intelligently respond to readers with sound solutions to their problems.

What to save

This is by far the most common question.

Wheat

This is the backbone of your survival diet. Wheat is the most stored seed in nature, with an unlimited shelf life under the right conditions. Wheat can also be sprouted by adding fresh greens to the diet even in winter. Put back £400 per person.

Salt

Although it is not a food, but a mineral salt, it is nevertheless necessary for nutrition and individual health. Salt is also used in preserving food and animal products. Salt like wheat has an indefinite life. Minimum £20 per person.

Honey

As a sweetener, honey makes an incomparable contribution to nutrition. Some think of it as a super food that gives energy and renewed vitality. As an extract from the plant kingdom, it is sure to contain many health-promoting ingredients. Honey like wheat and salt has an indefinite life. Minimum £10 per person.

Powdered milk

Most people turn their noses up at even the thought of powdered milk, preferring whole milk off the supermarket shelf. Admittedly it tastes slightly different, but it’s not unpleasant to drink, after a week or two it seems to “grow” on you. Studies have shown that nonfat milk powder, when kept dry and reasonably cool, can be stored with little change in value for over 15 years. You need 60 pounds per person.

Other foods

Once you get the basic four foods (wheat, sugar, milk powder, and salt) in the necessary proportions, it’s simple to add other foods as you get the extra money. Pinto beans, white rice, peas, soybeans, dried green peas, whole corn, and canned meats, fruits, and vegetables can be added to add more variety to the diet. And don’t forget to include pepper, baking powder, baking soda, canned yeast, dried eggs, cooking oil, multivitamins and minerals, and extra vitamin C capsules.

Storage method

I store all cereal, beans and powdered milk in food grade plastic bins. There is a lot of confusion and controversy about whether a bucket is food grade or not. A #2 inside a small triangle at the bottom of the bin means it is made of HDPE plastic and is food grade.

I bought mine at the local hardware store in the paint department. They also had them at Walmart, but I prefer to buy from local business owners if possible. Sometimes they can even get rid of bakeries and restaurants, just make sure they only kept food and not paint, chemicals or other things that can make you sick or die.

Foods packed in oxygen do not store as well as those in an oxygen-free atmosphere. Oxygen absorbers (available from Nitro-Pak) remove air from the closed container, leaving an atmosphere of 99% pure nitrogen in a partial vacuum.

Do not open the bag of oxygen absorbers until ready to use as they will absorb oxygen from the surrounding air and become useless. Have everything ready before opening the package. Any unused absorbents can be stored in a small canning jar until needed.

Make sure you have everything ready before you start. Then pour the food you plan to preserve into the bins a little at a time, shaking each one as it fills to settle and distribute the contents. Fill each bucket to about ½ inch from the top and pour three oxygen absorbers into each bucket of food.

Quickly place the lids on each bucket and close with grease by placing a board on top and tapping with a mallet or rubber mallet. After a few hours the absorbers will create a vacuum that will cause the lids on the bins to “pop down” indicating a good seal and a suitable atmosphere for long term storage. Be sure to label each one with the date, contents and weight written on the front in permanent marker.

Where to store

The next question is where to put all that food? Lack of space is the main drawback to living in a 26 foot travel trailer. Almost everything should be stored outside. Even in most homes and apartments, life can be cramped as more junk comes in to fill the space. One option is to sell some of the things you don’t use, maybe clean out a large closet and fill it with your stored food. You will need to take a look at your personal situation and available space, storing your food accordingly.

I have most of my food stored in my house behind my trailer. It may not be the idea set up, but it is dry and shaded in the summer. I took several cinder blocks and put a sheet of 4×8′ board on top to form a platform to stack the bins on to keep them off the ground. I’d love to have a root cellar big enough to hold most of my food storage, but for now I have to make do with something less than perfect.
